INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – In this economic climate some are deciding to launch their own business rather than try to find work in an uncertain corporate climate.

It’s not easy. According to the small business administration, 69% of small businesses fail within seven years. But hundreds of Hoosiers hope to beat the odds.

24-Hour News 8’s anchor Deanna Dewberry talked too many of them Tuesday at the Indiana Small Business Fair .

Small Business Fair To Be Held Tuesday

If there’s a silver lining to unemployment, it’s the motivation it provides many Hoosiers to start their own business.

Appearing on WIBC’s First Day program Sunday, Cathy Patton with Coaching Achievement and Success Network is one of the organizers of the Indiana Small Business Fair. It’s a free, all-day event at the Indy West Conference Center in Indianapolis on Tuesday, July 21.

Listen to the interview:

Patton says people who have a dream of starting their own business are often afraid of what seem like overwhelming challenges.

Patton says the fair will feature up to 70 exhibitors to answer questions and free small business seminars throughout the day. She says the key to success in a small business is networking, or forming relationships with other people who can help you and your business grow.

Indianapolis - With unemployment on the rise, many Hoosiers are taking the risk and starting up their own businesses.

Tuesday, more than 50 exhibitors will come together, companies and non-profit resources, to help small business owners grow and market their ventures, or for people wanting to start up their own.

Successful people who already work for themselves tell us that there’s no better time than the present to get started.

During a recession, many Hoosiers can’t get hired by large companies. Many of them are looking at how to put their own dreams to work, but have been hesitant because of the current economy.

The event is Tuesday at the Indy West Conference Center on N. High School Road from 8:30a.m. to 5:30p.m. and then there’s a networking session with free food from 6p.m. – 8p.m.

It’s a great opportunity to get connected.

“A lot of people are afraid because they don’t know about social media, they don’t know about what kind of funding they can get, what kind of business they need to do to get their business started. So, this is what they can find when they come to the fair,” said Cathy Patton, Indiana Small Business Fair.

If funding is a hurdle, you can find out at the fair ways to barter goods and services to save money.

Banks will also be there to answer your questions.

There will be a series of seminars and speakers throughout the day. For a schedule click here.
